You must have the Dodge Ram 3500 SLT model. In my business the joke is that the 'SLT' stands for "Same lousy transmissions" in those otherwise nice trucks.

You must have got a Dodge made in the USA instead of those produced in Mexico.
My kubota has the front axle broken off. In getting repaired now.

GaryM, I hadn't heard the SLT thingy before. Pretty funny. I'll file it away with FIAT (Fix it again Tony!) FORD (Fix or repair daily) Ever wonder why a car manufacturer would name its line, Killed in Action? (KIA) Chevy tried to sell their Nova south of the border with poor results. No va in espanol is It won't go!
Called the dealer for a progress report and they said they ordered a new tranny. I asked what happened (I'm a curious fellow) and they said they didn't open it up so they don't know. Yesterday the service manager said they might not be able to work on my truck because of after market items installed and gave as an example a high capacity tranny pan. When I asked how a finned aluminum high cap pan with better than stock capacity and cooling could possible contribute to failure he changed the subject to OTHER aftermarket stuff like my extra HD torque converter. I didn't even pursue that. In theory I get my truck back tonight. In theory I should only owe $50, the deductable of my Chrysler extended 100,000 mile waranty ('97 model with 70K miles). They'll probably want $10/pint for the extra trany fluid required to fill the bigger pan.

Egon, Bad guess, my BIG AMERICAN IRON was hecho en Mexico. I was blissfully unaware that any Dodge trucks were made in Mexico (previous truck was '84 Ford and '64 Ford before that) until it was delivered, I owned it, and then discovered all the hecho en Mexico stickers.
I don't know that they assembled or made the tranny so it is unlikely that there is a Mexican conection with my tranny failure. It might relate to all the extra lb-ft of torque and HP my engine produces with the changed out injector pump and injectors.
Interesting fact: I get more torque and HP for way better pulling and acceleration AND better fuel mileage than stock. HOW? Higher combustion efficiency with a finer fuel plume atomization.
I also have a mandrel bent 4 inch exhaust, a free flow muffler, and a K&B air filter. It doesn't light up the tires (19.5 inch) but it is quite healthy in acceleration.
The most ironic part of this debacle is that I called the owner of the Dodge dealership in advance before sending the truck in there to discuss customer oriented proactive service and to get a reading on whether they were going to do what they could to help me or try to find an excuse why they couldn't. I was assured I would be helped. Then, first chat with service manager, he was whining about aftermarket equip and how thay might not be able to work on the truck.
Oh well...

Pat, I hadn't heard about the SLT thing either, but some folks used to say FORD was also "Found On Road Dead" and of course MOPAR (Mostly Old Parts And Rust).
Well, I'm glad I was able to entertain with the SLT definition. I thought it was kind of funny when I heard it, too.
Bird, Glad to hear from you again. F)ound O)n R)oad D)ead... I like that too. Due to newsprint not distinguishing between lower case I and L (i & l) I had a new secretary once that tried to get her husband to answer an add in the paper for a FLAT. She wasn't sure what a FLAT was but the price and mileage were attractive.
Still no truck... I am still chuckling over the service manager's whine to me about my after market tranny pan. I asked him how he thought greater fluid capacity and aluminum cooling fins contributed to tranny failure and he started whining about something else.

Lower comission rate on warranty work? I thought SLT was "Should Likely Trade." For whatever reason, on my 99 1500 I only get right about 25000 miles on a rear set of shoes! Had to replace drums twice already (oot). Our 99 3500 hasn't had a lick of brake troubles though.
Boy this thread sure has degraded from it's original intent.
Pat, I've never done any modification to a transmission, other than adding an auxilliary transmission oil cooler, but one of my brothers just bought a 1995 crewcab dually diesel F350 Ford and a 1995 37' Carriage fifth wheel, and Monday he had a Transcommand installed on the truck at Camping World. He also weighed the rig; 25,100 pounds with no one in it. He and his wife left early yesterday morning for Ellensburg, WA. It'll be interesting to see how that rig holds up.
